My name is Kevin, and I am a beer lover. That wasn’t always the case though. For most of my adult life, I strictly abstained from all alcoholic beverages. Growing up with alcoholism in the family, and, later, witnessing the Naty Lite-guzzling bar trolls at my midwestern party school alma mater, instilled in me an acute wariness of alcohol. All of that started to change though when I spent a semester studying in Salzburg, Austria. For the first time, I got to experience a beer culture that didn’t revolve around the endless cycle of binge, puke, and rally. Beer there was about life and joy, friends and community. As the years advanced, my former caution gave way to increasing appreciation.
I am not a beer expert. When it comes to beer knowledge, I am a complete dilettante – knowing just enough to sound good, but no where near enough to get paid for it. I am a beer explorer. I may not know all there is to know, but I love learning, tasting, and experiencing. That’s why I started this blog: to show how even a teetotaler can turn into one who appreciates a good beer.
I am also a husband, a father, and a follower of Jesus. Thankfully, my wife also enjoys a good brew, which makes it easier for her to put up with my, at times, obsessive fascination. And, when he is of appropriate age, I hope that I’ll get to pass on this appreciation to my son as well. Above all things, I love a God who loves His creation. Benjamin Franklin’s well-known quote applies: “Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” Beer is one of His many gifts given to us to enjoy and not to abuse (Ephesians 5:18).
